Millboard is a family-owned, British company with its roots in the great
Creation of unique outdoor landscaping products is in the Millboard genes. Our founder, James Douglass, was the original founder of Stonemarket, now owned by Marshalls. James developed the early use of concrete to create paving slabs with the authentic look of stone but with design and performance features that natural stone could not offer. The current generation of Millboard directors grew up accompanying their father to reclaim yards to spend hours selecting the perfect stone on which to base new paving products.
After the sale of Stonemarket to Marshalls, the family applied the same philosophy to timber decking. Recognising the inherent weaknesses of timber decking that accompanied the beauty of natural wood, they set about creating a decking material that would capture the visual appeal of natural wood, yet boast performance and maintenance benefits that wood could not match. After years of exploration and development, the Millboard product was launched, and is today recognised as the premium non-wood decking on the market.
Still a family-run business, infused with a personal pride in maintaining the quality and exclusiveness of the unique product range, Millboard is the fruit of two generations of innovation and attention to detail. Now distributed throughout the UK and across the world, thousands of properties have been enhanced with the beauty and practicality of Millboard.
The Millboard story lives on.
Millboard decking is inspired by the beauty of nature but built to outperform it.
Our vision is to provide opportunity for every outdoor space to be distinguished with the beauty of natural timber, but with enhanced durability, safety and ease of maintenance.
We spent years developing the unique material that is Millboard, a decking material that today graces the gardens of stately homes, walkways of zoos, decks of luxurious coastal hotels and stylish homes. The goal was to create a decking material that replicated the beauty of natural wood, but addressed the problems of rot, wet-slip, and regular maintenance requirements.
The Millboard surface is inspired by the non-slip soles of shoes, and provides high slip-resistance even when wet. Combined with the wood-free resin composite underneath, Millboard is also resistant to sun, heat, rain and cold, making it a durable all-year-round material for outdoor environments.
Millboard creates spaces where people love to live life outside.
Any outdoor space can be transformed with the addition of real wood, whether in the form of decking, panelling or furniture. But the beauty of natural wood quickly fades without regular maintenance, becomes slippery when wet, and is susceptible to rotting and staining.
Millboard delivers the beauty of natural timber without the downsides.
Moulded from selected timbers, chosen for their distinctive appeal, and hand-coloured in authentic tones, Millboard looks just like real wood but doesn’t rot, retains high slip-resistance even when wet, and requires no maintenance other than a simple wipe clean.
Produced with passion and built to last
The world’s finest wood-free composite, Millboard is made from a unique polyurethane resin blend, with a resilient Lastane® surface layer. It’s the Lastane® surface that ensures that it’s anti-slip even when wet – in fact, we’re proud to say that it has the highest anti-slip properties available.
It’s also designed to withstand whatever the elements or everyday use may throw at it. Where timber, wood stain and varnish will fade over time, Millboard is highly resistant to UV light, and the non-porous material also resists moisture, stains, mould, algae and impact. And it won’t put splinters into delicate feet or paws.
Hassle-free outdoor space
Millboard is the perfect choice for every type of space: big or small, residential or commercial. As well as the peace of mind of ultra-low maintenance, its unique design also means that Millboard can be quicker and simpler to install than timber, with no pre-drilling or special tools needed – simply cut it like wood and screw straight through.
What’s more, although its appearance is virtually indistinguishable from the real thing, you’ll never need to stain it or worry about replacing warped or rotten timber, which means that you can really enjoy living life outside to the full.
And because Millboard is made in the UK using a low energy process system, and only moulded from reclaimed natural timber, you can also feel good knowing that its carbon footprint is low and it’s kinder to the forests than real-wood decking.
Millboard decking is proudly designed and made in Great Britain, demonstrating the skills of our craftspeople, as well as the latest technological advances that we have adopted.
We’re continually looking for ways that we can further enhance our products, whether through materials or manufacture. Our in-house Research and Development team is relentless in its pursuit of production innovations, ensuring Millboard is always one step ahead and performs to the very highest standard for years to come.
Yet because we also understand that there are some details that only the skilled eye of an artisan can deliver, we insist on carrying out many of our processes by hand, from preparing the original timber masters which we mould Millboard decking from, to carefully hand colouring each Millboard length in the incredibly true-to-life, tonal shades that is our signature feature.
To create a unique design of composite decking which provides the beauty of real wood (which no conventional composite decking does), we searched far and wide for the finest lengths of oak from which to hand mould the Millboard collection. It is this exclusive process that makes Millboard what it is – a non-wood decking material like no other.
Our director, Jerry, handpicks each timber personally, sifting through hundreds of specimens until he finds the winning combination of characterful grain and distinctive knots. We’ve gone to extraordinary lengths to seek out these original masters, often chancing upon them in the most unlikely places. The 100-year-old oak used to create our beautiful Weathered collection, was found in the rural countryside and originates from the floor of a French railway carriage. We were granted special permission to take moulds from these distinctive pieces of wood, which now form the basis of a truly unique decking material.
We bring this respect for authenticity and passion for detail to every step of the Millboard journey.
When you install Millboard, it’s not just a beautiful outdoor space you are investing in; you are also investing in a low-carbon material. Millboard is focused on continued sustainability and we have become the first premium outdoor flooring company in the world to have our carbon footprint independently verified.
We set out to replicate the beauty of wood and natural timber without all the flaws of a natural product. In doing so, we have produced a premium wood-free outdoor flooring board which is manufactured using the least amount of energy and carbons possible – leaving wood where it should be, growing gracefully in the ground just as nature intended.
In fact, the carbon footprint of Millboard is 430g CO2e per m2 which is the same carbon footprint as a high street caffè latte or a kilo of bananas.
WHERE CAN I USE MILLBOARD?Millboard is extremely versatile and can be used in practically every outdoor space to enhance decks, balconies, roof gardens, boardwalks, bridges, pontoons, seating, steps, planters and more.
DO I NEED TO SEAL MILLBOARD?No, all Millboard decking is surface-sealed in the factory to ensure they arrive in premium condition. In the first few weeks of use, rainwater will sit on the surface in globules, but don’t worry – this is normal and will stop once the temporary surface seal breaks down.
DOES MILLBOARD MARK?The Lastane® finish is highly resistant to scratches, food-and-drink stains, and everyday wear and tear. Sharp objects such as unprotected table or chair legs, spiked shoes or metal planter bases can leave marks if dragged across the surface, so take care when moving these items around. The risk of marking from strong dyes and stains such as berries and animal droppings will be reduced if removed as soon as possible.
HOW DO I CLEAN MILLBOARD?Because Millboard is made of non-porous composite, it resists mossy build-up and stains, so needs very little maintenance. To remove spills and marks, simply use a mild detergent and a brush. Steer clear of solvents, chemicals and abrasive cleaners that could damage your Millboard decking. There’s normally no need for pressure washing.
IS MILLBOARD SLIP RESISTANT?Yes, in BS79.76 slip resistance tests, all styles of Millboard achieve one of the highest slip-resistant ratings. The unique Lastane® surface – a soft elastomer coating – has been carefully developed to provide a tough surface that greatly enhances slip resistance in wet conditions.
CAN YOU RECOMMEND AN INSTALLER?A nationwide network of Approved Installers are available – click here. Chosen for their professionalism and high quality, you should always follow normal precautions before entering into a contract with a third party, especially if a deposit payment is required.
ARE MILLBOARD COLOURS CONSISTENT?As with all flooring, we advise buying all the Millboard you need at the same time to help ensure that the colour is as consistent as possible. If you don’t order all your Millboard at once, you can blend different batches to create only subtle variation throughout your space.
CAN MILLBOARD BE CUT JUST LIKE WOOD?Millboard can be cut with standard saw blades, although we recommend a carbon-tipped, multi-purpose chop saw. As the formed end of the board is lost when cut, these can be placed in less visual areas against a wall or edging profile. Matching Touch-up Coating for exposed ends is available to buy separately.
WHAT FIXINGS SHOULD BE USED TO FIX MILLBOARD?Following extensive trials, we recommend and supply Durafix® stainless steel screws, designed specifically for Millboard. There’s no need to pre-drill or countersink Millboard, and the unique Lastane® material self-heals, leaving only a virtually indistinguishable mark on the surface.
WHAT IF IT SNOWS OR IS ICY?A small amount of granulated white salt can be used to keep your Millboard ice-free. Please don’t use rock salt, as this contains clay and grit and can be abrasive. When winter’s over, clean the surface with soapy water and a soft broom.
WHAT SUB-FRAME BASE SYSTEM SHOULD BE USED WITH MILLBOARD?The ideal companion is our all-weather composite decking is Plas-Pro, a durable, hard-wearing and practical sub-frame material for spaces exposed to damp such as jetties, fishing platforms, pools, roof terraces and boardwalks. The Plas-Pro Millboard sub-frame system is made from 100% recycled plastic, which means it won’t rot, split or crack.
DOES MILLBOARD GET HOT IN THE SUN?CAUTION – In high temperatures or prolonged bright sunlight Millboard can become hot. Please exercise caution before walking barefoot on to Millboard in circumstances where the Millboard is in high temperatures and exposed to sunlight. In these circumstances, it may be necessary to use footwear. Special caution should be taken when using Millboard in areas where there is heat/UV reflective glass.
DOES MILLBOARD COME WITH A WARRANTY?Yes. Our warranty gives you peace of mind that we will stand by our word and will hold to the conditions as laid down in the warranty document. We will issue you with either a 25 year Residential Warranty or a 5 year Limited Warranty depending on the installation application of the boards and when it is registered within 90 days of the installation.
